Trait-specific Varieties are Easily Identified Thanks to Icon Program
02-01-2008

Pressed for time, busy turf professionals will benefit from Scotts Turf-Seed icon program which helps to easily identify varieties that are bred for tolerance to extreme conditions and resistance to common turfgrass diseases such as Gray Leaf Spot and Brown Patch.

Each of the five trait-specific programs – Brown Patch resistance, Gray Leaf Spot resistance, heat tolerance, salt tolerance and shade tolerance – is identified with a distinct icon. The icons help end-users quickly identify varieties developed with specific attributes in mind.

In addition, because varieties listed under each icon have been subjected to intense trials and have met or surpassed rigid standards for measuring tolerance to extreme conditions or resistance to a particular disease, turf professionals have added confidence that the variety will meet their specific needs.

“Years of research led to the development of trait-specific varieties intended to help turf professionals select varieties better suited to their unique challenges,” says Wayne Horman, director of marketing for Scotts Turf-Seed. “The icon program we created quickly identifies which varieties will work for best for their needs.”

As a direct result of implementing trait-specific varieties, turf professionals can maintain turf quality while reducing water usage, applying fewer chemicals or irrigating with effluent water. By reducing inputs, cost savings are experienced.

“Five program solutions are currently in place, but our commitment to research and development will surely result in the addition of future programs,” explains Horman.
